QuickZip is a FREE utility to manage compressed files. With this program you can open, extract and create the most common compressed archives including ZIP, RAR and 7z. QuickZip is a FREE alternative to WinZip, WinRAR and PowerArchiver. Although its interface is not the paradigm of beauty, QuickZip is powerful, full featured and has lots of tools like Search in Archive, Archive Finder, Multi Extract, Virus Scan Support, Mass Renamer, Encryption, Zip Repair, Archive Convert, SFX and Disk Span.
You will hardly need another file compression utility because QuickZip is able to open 22 encode and encryption formats, including the extensions zip, pk3, jar, 7z, ace, arj, bz2, bza, gza, cab, lha, lzh, rar, rs, rpm, tar, tgz, taz, gz, z, zoo, pak, wad, hog, sqx, czip and qze. If you consider that most popular compression formats are ZIP and RAR this software will meet most of your file compression requirements.
The simple and easy to use interface has plenty of options to customize it. For example, you can setup skins and fonts, toolbar and file list. You can even select default Multimedia viewers. This means that you can choose what program to use when opening a picture, an mp3 file or a video. You can pick up to 4 viewers like Windows Media Player, Winamp, VLC Media Player or any other you want. You can also customize the toolbar and select what icons appear on it.
QuickZip can create and run scripts. This lets you automate the process of backing up your sensitive data. It can process compressed archives in batch mode. This is useful when you have a lot of files that you want to compress, for example, when you’re uploading your book collection to your website. It has a Mass Renamer, so you can rename your files using wildcards. You can use Bookmarks for compressed archives. This is helpful if you have some files you use frequently but you want them to remain compressed and encrypted.
You can choose what kind of file extension you want to associate with QuickZip and which functions will appear in the context menu of your Windows Explorer. You can also manage saved passwords, list of opened files and assign user defined directories. In addition, you are able to select View Mode like you do in Windows Explorer. You can choose between Icon, List, Report, Small Icon and Thumbnail.
The interface is translated into English, Bulgarian, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, German, Dutch, Finnish, French, Hungarian, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. You can setup a virus scanner to prevent opening an infected file. Even the program is quite intuitive, you may require some HELP to do specific tasks. Unfortunately, Help is not available on Windows Vista and if you want to register the shell extensions, you should start QuickZip using "Run as admin" mode. Although it’s difficult to find online documentation, there’s an active Support Forum in the web site.
